Sponsored by Saint Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church and Burke Presbyterian Church
Give spring cleaning extra meaning and donate your used bicycles to Bikes for the World, a local non-profit organization that collects usable/repairable bikes** and ships them to poverty-stricken areas all over the world. After the bikes are reburbished, they become main sources of transportation to work, school, and health care.
**Please note: we accept all serviceable and nearly complete bicycles for children, youth, and adults, including tandems, recumbents and adult (only) tricycles; bicycle spare parts, components, accessories, and tools; and even serviceable, quality portable sewing machines.
At this event last spring, we collected 95 bikes and 2 sewing machines.
Here’s you you can participate this year:
- Drop off bikes – ONE DAY ONLY – on Saturday, April 13, 9:00 am to noon, St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church, Farrell Hall Parking Lot, 5222 Sideburn Rd, Fairfax, VA 22032
- Make a donation – A tax-deductible contribution of $10 or more per bike to help with local Bikes for the World processing costs is greatly appreciated. Make checks payable to St. Mary of Sorrows, with “Bikes for the World” in the memo line.
- Volunteer – Adults and teens with adult partners can help process the bikes for shipment and assist with loading the truck for transport. No experience needed, and you can earn service hours.
If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, contact the church office at 703-764-0456 or office@BurkePresChurch.org or Earl Smith.
Visit the Bikes for the World website for more information, including a collection schedule and locations in Northern Virginia that accept donations on a regular basis.
